3 Common Tampa Plumbing Troubles That We Handle
A lot of the housing construction in Tampa dates back over 50 or even 60 years. These older homes tend to have a lot of plumbing related issues, mainly due to aging pipes. Add to that the sweltering Florida climate, and the local water quality, you have a recipe for pipe and sewer line failures. Our expert plumbers have seen them all, and these are some of the most common problems they encounter in our customer homes:
1. Pipe Failure
These mainly involve the pipes used to bring the municipal water supply to your Tampa home. A lot of the older Tampa homes use copper, galvanized steel, cast iron, and Orangeburg fiber pipes, all of which may be well past their expiry date.
Copper pipes have been around since at least the 1950s. Pinhole leaks are a common issue with these pipes. They arise mainly due to a process called pitting, where the pipes degrade from the inside. The water quality is the main reason for this kind of failure, but other external conditions can also be responsible.
Steel pipes with zinc in them (galvanized steel) last a long time, but can still rust over the decades. Rust is a particularly nasty threat, as it will first taint the water supply, and then lead to pipe failures. Water from these pipes will eventually destroy your water appliances like heaters.
Our Solution: Leak fixing, Re-Plumbing
Solitary leaks can be easily detected and plugged. But when your pipe system starts showing its age with frequent leaks and rusty water, it may be time to think about a re-piping or re-plumbing. Delaying this step may result in further structural damage, as well as a potential increase in water charges.
2. Sewer Failures
Unlike troubles that affect the water supply, anything to do with your sewer system can potentially make your home just unlivable. Our experienced plumbers can clean up the mess and effect quick repairs on all kinds of sewer line failures.
Old Tampa homes often have cast iron pipes that rust away with the passage of time. Acidic soil and water are the main culprits. Corrosion results in exposure to soil, which often brings roots which cause further damage.
Some older homes may have terracotta or clay pipes in their sewer system. Though they can last a long time, often centuries, they can fail due to cracking. Sometimes, the joints also get separated. Roots from the soil will inevitably cause further damage.
Orangeburg is a type of pipe made from tar coated fibers. They have not been used since at least 1972 and should be replaced ASAP. They are very brittle and can break or deform within a few decades.
Our Solution: Repair or Replacement of Sewer Lines
We replace all your damaged and corroded lines with brand new pipes and fittings that last longer. Sometimes, all you need is a particular pipe or fitting to be replaced. But if your system has any of the old lines mentioned above, you may need to get your entire sewer system replaced.
3. Water Heater Repair and Maintenance
If you have a tank water heater, you can expect it to last for a maximum of 15 years. Tank-less models will last a bit longer, but all of them can be expected to fail at some point or the other. And they also become less efficient as they age. The climate and water quality in Tampa do not help either. Our experienced plumbers can handle all kinds of water heater repair and maintenance services.
